How to install cedar shingle siding? | |
• Start from the bottom, making sure your first rows of shingles overlap the roof edge by at least one and a half inches. Only on the first one, put the thick shingle end facing the peak. Fasten your shingles using two nails an inch from every side and 4 inches away from the top. Distance adjacent shingles 3/4 inch to 1/8 inch from one another.
• Completely overlap your first row with the second row of shingles (that row and all the subsequent rows having their thick end towards the edge of your roof). Ensure that the row covers any gaps between the shingles below by at least one and a half inches.
• Place a chalk line starting from one part of your roof to the other and mark the upper edge of your next shingle row as you should leave an exposure of 5 or 4 inches, and then install a new row to that mark. Make sure you leave the 3/4-inch to 1/8-inch gap between nearby shingles and to overlap the gaps in the underlying row by 1 and 1/2 inches. Trim any shingles to the right width when you end a row.
• Work up towards the roof, cutting chalk lines for every row, until you get to the top part. Install some roofing felt onto the peak before you installing the final shingle row.
• Use a hand plane and align the edge of every shingle to have the same angle with the rows meeting at the peak.
