How to install vinyl siding to gable? | |
• Make a chalk line running parallel to the bottom of your gable from an end till the other one so there is a straight line for installing your vinyl siding.
• Attach a J-channel on that line. The J-channel’s thickness will be determined according to the width of the vinyl siding. With flat head nails, either attach it to your plywood shear panel if applicable, or to the studs.
• Staple the paper siding onto the gable beginning at the bottom. The first piece should overlap the J-channel flange that is nailed onto the studs, and should sit into the channel. It depends on the roof’s pitch whether you need some additional paper. If you do, overlap your second paper on top of your first 6-inches. Attach this paper using 1/2-inch staples.
• Seal your paper well along the roof’s slope sides with silicone caulking, from the apex down to the bottom of the gable. Only seal its sides.
• Start at the base and sit the first piece of siding in your J-channel. Install the following piece above this first one with an inch of overlapping. Utilize 1-inch roof nails along your top edge so the next pieces cover the nail heads. Go on up the gable until you reach the top.
